Link - ups: do they count for much? November 2, 2008
Not really, but does anything in our sport really make sense? We look for the hardest way up the wall, then try and find the easiest way up it! Link-ups are fun for training, though often make two OK routes into one really good one.
Wet or What!
Britain has been wet, OK so it’s usually wet, but this summer was beyond wet, Nothing dry, Autumn is the best month to climb, cold and crisp, that’s what we have now, pity everything is still wet from summer.
Except a few bits of rock, enough to keep us happy, enough for some movement and enough to test our fingers and give us that fix we need. The route Evolution was dry, a classic of Jerry Moffat at 8c+. It always inspired me and was the first route I thought was a proper hard route. It was the start of my sport climbing really. I’ve enjoyed an affair with the route over the years, extending it rightwards to give Mutation, and using it as a benchmark and for training. This year I managed to link it into the top section of another route via a hard crimpy wall. It’s only a link up, but is a great challenge. No one else will probably try it or care but for me it marks the end of a long affair with a great route that’s been with me right from the start.
